Well, usually that unwritten law operates on some form of cosmic karma function. The people holed up in the safe spot go all Lord of the Flies and degenerate into corruption, decadence, and all other manner of Bad Stuff(tm) until the zombies come in and give them what for on behalf of the Universal Moral Principle.
Often the opening the zombies need for this retribution comes as a result of a human wronged by those within the compound, like in Day of the Dead or 28 Days Later. Land of the Dead features a zombie still mentally intact enough to know he and his "people" been wronged.
So if the people on this theoretical island don't become complete assholes, maybe they stand a chance. But then again, another unwritten law of the zombie genre seems to be that people holed up in compounds inevitably become complete assholes (or at least are being run by them).
