In a hypocracy, keeping TPTB focused *over there =>* on their favorite shibboleths while we’re doing something *<= over here* in order to get by is a very good thing.
No hypocracy or prudishness – the network has product placement deals with their sponsors, and only beverages distributed or produced by paying advertisers may be displayed.
Kinda like Netflix these days. They can air soft kiddiepr0n (Cuties), but put a “smoking” warning on anime where some evil cartoon villain smokes a cigar once.
Deoxy, that’s not really new for anything in general.
I mean, you remember the 90’s where you couldn’t put firearms on a kids cartoon, but lasers and giant robots firing missiles was fine, right?
There is always going to be a disproportionate reaction or lack there of partially dependent on what people pay to put on the air or keep off it.
Not to say the smoking industry didn’t most certainly deserve to become reviled after decades of burying the harmful effects of their products and their attempts to make them steadily more addictive.
