379 – Zulu India

It's an age old stereotype that military Generals are cold and heartless, disconnected from the men under their command and knowing them as nothing more than calculations, raw numbers to be moved around and occasionally sacrificed in pursuit of victory. And no doubt some of them throughout history have been bastards of that sort, but others made a point of knowing names and faces and always keeping keenly aware of the human cost of the tough calls they had to make, especially when those calls turned out to be catastrophic mistakes. Buck here seems like he might fall into the latter category, for whatever difference it makes to the dead.

  1. So, they send in rats to wake up the zombies! But wait, couldn’t they just put a spotlight on the drone? Then they could just do a visual scan! ?

  2. Using rats is very clever. They are small (easier to transport), intelligent and trainable, breed quickly, eat less than a larger animal would and have a less constrained diet. Not to mention that they are everywhere, can fit into any hole they can get their head through (small ones can fit through a hole the size of a quarter), and can swim.

In various places in Africa, they are using trained rats to find buried landmines and detect tuberculosis.

  3. And, unlike dogs, rats are not haram … which helps in Central Asia and much of Africa. Also, after a few hours, dogs want to play, and will often signal falsely. Rats, on the other hand, are always food motivated, and will work while awake.
