We can't quite recall which Western movie it was -- Silverado? Young Guns? Maybe one of you readers knows, in which case we'd love a reminder in the comments -- but the line stuck with us. One of the protagonists gets his hat taken and goes through some trouble and violence to get it back, and when his partner asks why, he simply replies, "This hat remembers me." It's not just sentiment, either, a good cowboy hat will mold itself to its wearer over a period of time -- someone else might take it and put it on, but it won't fit quite right, not the way it does with its true owner. Whether you believe in a bit of country-style animism or not, it'll remember your head, and that there's just a fact.

Oh?! Their lovely neighbors are coming for a curtesy visit? That niiice lady, the one with the friendly smile, you know? I heard her pudding was to die for!
I can’t check because SILVERADO on VHS and I need to work on the VCR a bit, but Payden says something about his hat that includes, “My head spent three years training it.” And he goes to some trouble and violence to get it back.
(I appreciate the sentiment . . . I have a pretty pale grey hat with a black satin band, but it was damaged in a fight and I can’t find anyone who fixes hats these days!)
I do want to say it’s Silverado since Paden was certainly keen on that hat, but I can’t find anything where he says it remembers him. Ah well, maybe I’m just crazy and made the line up myself, after all. I suppose I’m fine with that. 🙂

Frank is just full of bad news.
Also, Silverado is a great movie.
“Can’t you see this horse loves me?”
“I had a woman do that to me once, didn’t make her my wife.”

There was a line similar to that in Drugstore Cowboy. It was in a scene in a motel room.
