UPDATING OCCASIONALLY (FOR NOW)

378 – Me Myself And Eyeball

Yes, if you weren't aware the term Mark I Eyeball to mean unaided visual inspections is totally a thing and has been in "officially unofficial" use by the military for decades. The term that is. The eyeball has, of course, been in use for far longer. Very cost effective equipment, hasn't ever needed an update. Oh yeah, and the infrared thing has a whole TV Trope entry devoted to it. I still find the most ironic part is that a standard pane of glass can foil it where an eyeball sees through just fine. "Predator Vision" it is not (though the hand print effect in this video is pretty sweet). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsjjdwLFNIM

  1. Rats? What about dogs? ?

  2. I can confirm – if you look at a house from outside using IR viewer, the windows will either be warmer than the walls (winter) or cooler (summer) due to less efficient insulation. However, the WHOLE window will be the same temp unless there is something very close behind it that is way different in temperature. OTOH, IR CAN see through walls, sometimes. If the wall isn’t insulated, and is thin enough, and the heat source is enough different than ambient air. Seeing a body in an unheated outbuilding in winter is doable. Seeing a body (98d) in a climate controlled house (say 75d) not so much, even if just a sheetrock wall – definitely not through an insulated exterior wall.

  3. Indeed, lots of ‘ifs.’ Definitely more than the average soldier would want to stake their life on, I wager!

Crazyman, your question might be answered in the next page… or at least you might get a sense of why not dogs. 😀
