Hopefully Rosa is either going to find a white rag on a stick or is planning to stand up ve-e-e-r-y slowly, since we got ourselves a hair trigger going now... Next comic page is planned for June 1st, so see you then!

    … Lacey could have walked out slowly, locked the door and got help to search the barn. Instead, she is waving around a gun shouting at the dark… She reminds me way too much of certain people I have met (luckily, unarmed)

    Well done (from a gun guy)! She has a pretty good two-handed grip (support hand should be higher). One handed manipulation of the safety. She is out in the open instead of up against a wall. But like SteelRaven said, better to get help. “Clearing a room” by yourself in dark/dim setting is very dangerous. Although I think Rosa is in more danger, especially if she startles Lacey.

    [ConcordBob], I have a question regarding “plink” “chak!].

    Please don’t tell me she was presenting that weapon and offering threats with the safety on, and the firearm not cocked. If so, somebody has been watching too many movies.

    [Dr. Norman] Yes, as written, she drew the weapon in #493 and pointed it towards the potential threat, then a second later removed the safety and racked it after speaking in #493. Not the best tactics, but I don’t expect she is an experienced “operator”. If it was carried chamber-empty, then she did not need to have the safety on. The proper way to carry a 1911 is chambered, safety on, in a good holster. Procedure: Draw and disengage safety.

    If not in a holster, then carry with chamber empty and safety off. Procedure: Draw and cycle slide. Called Israeli method. My understanding is that when Israel was founded, the army scraped up weapons from anywhere they could get them quickly. The only way to operate a semi-auto handgun that worked with all models was to carry chamber empty and cycle the slide after draw.

    I’m comfortable with the “not an experienced operator” idea. It always disappoints me when actors engage an opponent at gunpoint and after some witty repartee back and forth, THEN make the weapon operational. At this point, I will plug for Mick Herron’s excellent “Slow Horses” novel series, and additionally for the Apple TV series, which is good enough. I enjoyed watching Catherine Standish (your British mum as a washed-up spy) say after racking a Glock “We all know I won’t shoot you dead, but I’ll put a bullet through your foot and THAT will wipe the smirk off your face”.

    I can accept the “not a skilled operator” concept. It just frustrates me to see movie actors engage in threatening repartee with their opponent at gunpoint, and ONLY THEN arm the weapon. At this point I’d like to place a plug for the excellent Mick Herron novel series “Slow Horses” – the derived Apple TV video series is pretty good also.
